Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

Matt Jasper Reimagines Wilco’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot as a Stripped-Down Americana Odyssey

Indie folk artist Matt Jasper returns with his boldest reinterpretation yet: a full-length cover of Wilco’s seminal Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Recast through a warmer, more rustic lens, Jasper’s version leans into the Americana and singer-songwriter traditions Wilco explored on Summerteeth, dialing back the glitchy atmospherics of the original in favor of an intimate, acoustic-forward approach. Released independently on May 5, 2023, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is a labor of love that reverently reinterprets the classic record while carving out new emotional terrain.

Where the original Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is celebrated for its haunting experimentation, Jasper’s take explores the same emotional vulnerability with simpler textures: banjo, acoustic guitar, bass, and minimal percussion. The banjo—often processed through light effects—becomes a lead voice across the album, offering a plaintive counterpoint to his understated vocals. Songs like “Jesus, Etc.” and “Reservations” gain a haunting immediacy in this format, while upbeat tracks like “Heavy Metal Drummer” are infused with gentle drum machine pulses that feel at once nostalgic and novel.

This reimagined Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is perfect for fans of indie folk and alternative country who have long wondered what would’ve happened if Wilco had continued on their Summerteeth trajectory. With rootsy instrumentation and faithful-yet-fresh arrangements, Jasper invites listeners to hear these beloved songs anew, as if rediscovered through the crackle of an old radio in a quiet country town.

“Wilco has always been a north star for me as a songwriter,” Jasper shares. “I’ve lived with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot since it came out, but I always wondered what those songs would feel like without the layers of abstraction—if they were played on a front porch instead of through broken circuits. This is my love letter to those songs, to Jeff Tweedy’s writing, and to the ghost of the Americana band Wilco might’ve stayed.”
